One of Tuscany's most interesting centers, Lucignano di Arezzo is remarkable for its singular layout, a circular plan with ramparts which enclose narrow streets that move in concentric circles. Both the outer walls and the buildings within, erected betwen the 13th and 18th centuries, are beautifully preserved. The village boasts a 15th century fortress, the exquisite Gothic church of San Francesco, and a small museum with a frescoes from the Siennese and Aretine schools. Among a rich collection of artifacts and period furnishings, the prize item is a reliquary of the late-gothic gold work typical of Arezzo.
Despite its size, Lucignano offers the essentials: a bank, two supermarkets that sell wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables, four butcher shops, a newspaper kiosk that carries the Herald Tribune, hair stylist and barber shop, a pharmacy, an efficient clinic, a small travel agency, dry cleaners, two shoe stores, a convenience store that sells clothes, toys and basic beauty products, some boutiques, various pizzerias, and six restaurants. Courtesy and friendliness are the trademark of all Lucignanesi. Once a week the entire village is closed to traffic in order to host a colorful open air market.
